So many women tell me the same thing: their wardrobes are full, yet they only ever wear a handful of trusty “go-to” pieces. The rest sit unworn... quietly adding to the clutter and feeling of overwhelm.
One common culprit? Decision fatigue. When life is already filled with choices (at work, juggling schedules and meetings, or at home making meals, running errands, going to appointments, etc), our brains can run low on energy. By the time we get to our wardrobe, getting dressed feels like one choice too many. So we fall back on what's easy and familiar.
3 WAYS TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF
1. Create a seasonal capsule.
Store away what you’re not currently wearing - seasonal pieces or items that don’t fit right now. You can tuck them in a suitcase or another closet. What’s left is a smaller rotation of favourites you love and actually wear, and getting dressed is quicker, calmer, and easier. (It also helps you to spot any gaps in your wardrobe, so future shopping trips feel more mindful.)
2. Define your colour palette.
Choose 1-3 neutrals (like black, white, grey, navy, brown, camel, or khaki) and 2-3 accent colours you love. Because everything works with neutrals and accents tie outfits together, it brings a sense of harmony to your wardrobe, making outfit building feel natural and uncomplicated.
3. Use a style anchor.
Start with one piece that sets your tone for the day:
- A blazer or jacket that makes you feel powerful
- A colourful dress that always lifts your mood
- Pants that drape beautifully and move with you
Personally, I usually begin with shoes (my fussy feet dictate this!). Comfy sneakers if I know I’ll be walking a lot, or chic ankle boots or heels when I need a confidence and posture boost. From there, it’s easy (and fun) to build the rest of my look.
PERSONALISED WARDROBE GUIDANCE
While these shifts can make a big difference on their own, sometimes it helps to have a personalised approach to make the most of your wardrobe.
This is exactly what led me to create The Mindful Wardrobe Edit.
In a 90 minute 1:1 Zoom session, we'll review your “go-to” and “unsure” pieces, explore fresh outfit combinations, and map out a wardrobe strategy that works for your lifestyle and values.
Every wardrobe - and every session - is unique. For some, we might spend most of the time creating new outfits from what they already own. For others, we might focus on elevating their go-to pieces and filling a few key gaps that make outfit building easier in the future. Whatever your starting point, the session is tailored to what will help you feel confident and organised.
You also receive a summary with key takeaways, a wishlist, my 59 page style guide, and a $50 Mad Nomad credit.
With a few thoughtful adjustments, your wardrobe can start working harder for you... with less stress, less clutter, more confidence and joy every time you get dressed.
